 Fostering Student Learning

Graduates should possess an understanding of the primacy of the educational mission of higher education and the basic processes through which students are engaged in this mission.

Specifically students should be able to demonstrate...

      • A broad knowledge of the academic requirements of the institutions they serve
      • An appreciation of the academic rigor required of students who desire to successfully navigate their academic career
      • A commitment to developing strategies for uniting the curricular and co-curricular dimensions of higher education

Global Village

As part of the Student Learning and the Co-Curriculum course, I was charged with creating a proposal for a learning environment within an institution of higher education. I decided to focus on creating a living-learning community that focused on integrating international and national students into an environment that sparks interest about international communities, global concerns, and world-wide cuisines.

Alternative Break

     Alternative Spring Break

As part of the Student Learning and Co-Curriculum course I worked in a group to create a proposal for an Alternative Spring Break Service-Learning Program. The mission of the proposed program is to promote service at local, regional, national and international levels through break-oriented programs that immerse students in different cultures. The Alternative Spring Break Program we proposed was a trip to New Orleans to work alongside a non-profit that assists residents who are still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Those students involved in the program would earn 1 unit of credit and would be required to participate in pre-departure meetings. Faculty would also be involved in the process, including traveling with the students to New Orleans. The students would also be required to participate in a debriefing process after they return.

     Alternative Thanksgiving Break

I assisted in the coordination of a Alternative Thanksgiving Break team to New Orleans as part of my assistantship in the Office of World Missions. The team was sent out as the first ever Global Relief team from Azusa Pacific University, though a team had partnered with Global Relief the previous summer in Bangladesh. I worked closely with the team leader to coordinate itineraries, flights, rental cars, and work sites. I also spent time with the team prior to their departure to assist in their mental and spiritual preparation for the trip. Following the trip, I was able to meet with the team leader and a majority of the team to assist in their debrief and to provide resources for any needs that could arise from their experience.

Movie Screenings

During my time as the Graduate Assistant in the Office of World Missions I have assisted in the creation of student learning through the use of media, specifically film. On most occasions the film is brought to campus by a non-profit organization who screens the film and conducts a debrief session following the film which usually includes times for questions and advocacy. Movie screenings were not on my job description when I started in the office, but somehow over the course of my first year our office and Global Relief because known as the “movie screening people.” Over the last two months of my internship alone I have had two non-profits referred to me by other offices on campus. What follows are a list of the films that were screened at Azusa Pacific University during my tenure in the Office of World Missions.

    God Grew Tired of Us

The film was screened in partnership with Global Vision Week 2007. The film was shown outside on a large lawn area where students could  eat dinner at tables and/or bring a blanket and sit on the grass. After the screening a question and answer session was lead by a moderator and one of the “Lost Boys” featured in the film, who attends Azusa Pacific University.

The documentary explores the journey of three of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan who were orphaned by civil war as they are relocated to America.
