Take some time to read about the country of Bangladesh, listen to some voices of victims, and look at pictures of the devastation.
Line 2: Water
On the Twine:
Every BLUE ribbon represents 5 fresh water wells destroyed by Cyclone Sidr. Charity: Water (a non-profit organization that helps bring fresh water to people all over the world) estimates that 1475 wells were destroyed by Cyclone Sidr. 295 Blue Ribbons were tied on the twine.
Think About it:
It costs $750 to build a new tube-well in Bangladesh. In 2006, US bottled water producers made approximately $10.9 million dollars. It would cost 1.1 million to rebuild all the wells that were destroyed by Cyclone Sidr.
Line 3: People Affected
On the Twine:
Every RED ribbon represents 50,000 people affected by Cyclone Sidr. Estimates say that between 8 million and 10 million people were affected by this natural disaster. 200 Red Ribbons were tied on the twine.
Think About it:
As of January 1, 2007 the population of Los Angeles County was approximately 10 million. So for every single person that lives in Los Angeles County 1 person in Bangladesh was affected by Cyclone Sidr.
Line 4: Homes Destroyed
On the Twine:
Every YELLOW ribbon represents 20,000 homes destroyed by Cyclone Sidr. 150 Yellow Ribbons were tied on the twine.
Think About it:
It costs about $500 USD to rebuild a home in the cyclone affected area. The median price of a home in California in 2007 was over $490,000. For the price of 1 home in California, 980 could be built in the cyclone affected areas.
Line 5: Lives Lost
On the Twine:
Every WHITE ribbon represents 25 people who died because of Cyclone Sidr. 200 White Ribbons were tied on the twine.
Think About it:
Estimates report that 5,000+ people died because of Cyclone Sidr. There are 4,615 undergraduate students enrolled at APU this year. Basically, the undergraduate population would be completely gone at APU.
Line 6: Money
On the Twine:
Every GREEN ribbon represents $200 that the APU community hopes to raise this semester. 250 Green Ribbons were tied on the line.
Think About it:
For $650 1 family in Bangladesh can rebuild their home and be provided with the basic needs to help them re-establish their life. Our Goal: 75 families or $50,000
Line 7: Solidarity
On the Twine:
Every BLACK ribbon represents 1 person in the APU community that has prayed for Bangladesh, the victims of Cyclone Sidr, and the relief efforts. Throughout the week varies students tied Black ribbons on the twine.
